Adding, replacing and retiring devices

Kit inventory: in service, add a seat, swap a probe or plug, retire hardware, re-run setup.

The brain keeps an inventory of every device it expects: role, host or IP, in-service flag, and per-device extras. Kit › Inventory is the day-to-day view; Settings › Devices › Inventory is where you edit.

In service means the brain expects this device to report. Out of service devices stay grey, never raise dark alerts, and are skipped by the appliance driver. Probes 1 and 2 have their toggle right on Kit › Inventory; everything else is in Settings › Devices. Take a device out of service when you unplug it for more than a few hours. Put it back when it returns; the dark alerts start judging it again after the first fresh reading.

Settings › Devices › Inventory › Add device / seat registers a Zigbee sensor or extra appliance the firmware does not define: give it a Seat ID, a Name, a Placement (4×8, 2×4, Room, Shared) and a Kind (Sensor or Appliance), then Add seat. It lands out of service: bind its role on the Zigbee tab, then put it in service once it is wired.

1. Flash the replacement (USB flash or the ESPHome dashboard) with the same role.
2. Open the seat's drawer in Settings › Devices › Inventory and check its IP / host, MAC, Firmware and Last seen. The drawer shows these; it edits only Function, Placement and Capability cap (%).
3. Recalibrate if it is a probe: Kit › Calibrate › Soil test or Soft cal.

Plant assignments are by slot, not by hardware, so the plant keeps its journal.

Probes 3 and 4 were removed from the kit; the brain deletes their seed rows on boot unless you added them yourself. If you add a third probe later it is kept (the add route stamps it). Features whose hardware is on hold indefinitely (the AC relay F-001, the clone mister F-002) stay visible as honest out of service rows, not as pending work.

Settings › Devices › Assignment maps devices to functions and placements (which fan is the room exhaust, which plug is the heater, capability limits such as max %). Change it when you re-plumb the room, not when a device merely goes offline.

Settings › Devices › Probe stations records each probe's idle home (the soil-test dock). This is separate from plant assignment: a probe can be assigned to a plant and still have a home to return to after a soil test.

Settings › System › Kit setup shows the setup phase, commissioned state and any flash debt, with a Re-run setup link to #/setup. Nothing is wiped. On a kit that is commissioned, or whose hub or probes have already reported, the wizard stays parked and offers only Open Overview.
